Articles & Media

In May 2024, Clean & Prosperous Institute (CPI) released what we then called our Risk of Repeal map, which offered the most comprehensive visualization of Climate Commitment Act (CCA)-funded projects across Washington state that were at risk of delay or cancellation due to Initiative 2117. To-date, we have racked up more than 22,000 engagements on the site and countless mentions across media, policymakers, businesses, and nonprofit organizations.

On the heels of voters’ historic and resounding affirmation of the CCA, our state continues to expand investments in programs to catalyze the clean energy economy and mitigate emissions. Earlier this month, we refreshed our map – now called Mapping Washington’s Climate Commitments – for the first time since the fall. We also debuted a new map showing the impact frozen or slashed federal funding could have on climate and environmental projects across the country. At CPI, we remain committed to mapping these historic investments in a way that is accessible, transparent, and engaging for Washington policymakers, businesses, and communities.

Mapping Washington’s Climate Commitments

Why is this important?

The defeat of Initiative 2117 unlocked approximately $645 million in climate-focused appropriations. To-date, the CCA has generated over $2.6 billion from the state’s largest polluters, and has already put 80 percent of those funds to work in projects that clean our air and water, transition our economy off of fossil fuels, and help to mitigate the accelerating effects of climate instability.

These investments are integral to delivering promises to communities in every county across Washington state. Not only that: The CCA is an unmatched economic and jobs creator and will continue catalyzing innovation, careers, and growth in the clean energy economy.

New Mapped Investments

To-date, CPI has mapped nearly 2,500 projects and over $2.1 billion in specific investments powered by the Climate Commitment Act. We recently published our first update since the fall, and have added 68 new investments – totaling $44 million – to the map.
