In recognition of meaningful advances in Washington-based clean energy innovation and in the spirit of our founder, the 4th annual David & Patricia Giuliani Clean Energy Entrepreneur Award will be presented on Tuesday January 7th at the Future of Carbon Policy Forum.
The award recognizes meaningful advances in clean energy innovation. The inaugural winner was Kenworth Trucks, the second winner was Myno Carbon, and last year’s winner was Group14.
This year we had a long list of nominees, from which three impressive finalists were selected:
We’re profiling each nominee this week. Today we’re looking at Atlas Agro.
With a mission to feed the world sustainably, Atlas Agro – a global leader in green fertilizer production – is developing the world’s first at-scale, low-carbon production facility in the world, the Pacific Green Fertilizer Plant in Richland, WA.
What is “green fertilizer”, you ask? Here’s a quick 3-minute answer:
Atlas Agro’s production process is powered by renewable energy sources to produce green hydrogen, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90% as compared to traditional fertilizer manufacturing using grey hydrogen production methods.
According to Atlas Agro, the Pacific Green Fertilizer Plant is designed to provide 700,000 tons of low-carbon nitrogen fertilizer annually to farmers across the Pacific Norwest, which will not only drive deep decarbonization in Washington state’s $14 billion agricultural economy, but also lessen U.S. dependence on foreign-produced, carbon-intensive fertilizers.
The U.S. Departments of Energy and Agriculture are bullish on Atlas Agro, with the DOE including Atlas Agro in its PNW Hydrogen Hub, and the USDA making significant investments in the Pacific Green Fertilizer Plant through the Fertilizer Production Expansion Program to increase domestic fertilizer production, strengthen the agricultural supply chain and spur economic growth in rural communities.
